How far should the box-type transformer be from us to be safe?

Nov. 21, 2022

We are now in an electrical era, and there are various electrical equipment among high-rise buildings, which guarantee the power supply and operation of our lives. I don’t know if you know the box-type substation, which is the “big iron box” you will see when you enter the market next to the street. This is the box-type substation, which supports the power in our lives. Every time you pass by the power equipment, you can hear the sound of "sizzling", so does this kind of power equipment have a lot of radiation? How far away does the box-type transformer need to be from us to be considered a safe distance?

How far should the box-type transformer be from us to be safe?

First of all, you will not get an electric shock. Secondly, with regard to electromagnetic wave radiation, power transmission and distribution are all at a low frequency of 50HZ, which also releases low-frequency electromagnetic waves, but it is high-frequency electromagnetic waves that really cause harm to the human body. Electromagnetic waves, like water ripples caused by stones, will gradually weaken with the propagation distance. The outdoor box-type substation itself emits low-frequency electromagnetic waves, which are easy to weaken with distance, and naturally cause less damage. So as long as you don't get close to the outdoor box-type substation and don't open the door of the box-type substation without authorization, it won't cause any harm to your health.

The power supply facilities set up in residential areas by high-voltage power distribution cabinets and low-voltage power distribution cabinets must meet these standards in order to pass the environmental protection administrative license: power frequency electric field intensity does not exceed 4 kV/m; magnetic induction intensity does not exceed 0.1 millitesla; In terms of interference, the 110KV project shall not exceed 53 decibels, and the 500KV project shall not exceed 55 decibels; the noise impact shall not exceed 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. As long as these indicators meet the standards, there are no strict requirements on the distance between related equipment and buildings in terms of environmental protection.

However, according to the environmental protection department, my country currently has certain requirements for the distance between box-type substations and buildings. For example, a general 10KV-35KV substation requires the front to be more than 12 meters away from residential buildings and the side to be more than 8 meters; the construction of substations above 35KV requires the front to be more than 15 meters away from residential buildings and the side to be more than 12 meters; box-type substations are required to be more than 5 meters away from residential buildings .

Therefore, the location of the box-type substation should be set in a safe and hidden place. In addition to considering the convenience of entering and exiting the deepest load center, the impact on the surrounding environment should also be considered. The distance from the sidewalk should not be less than 1m, and the clear distance from the main building should not be less than 3m.
